National Picnic Week, 18–26 June 2022

18–26 June is National Picnic Week, so why not enjoy a picnic with family and friends?

Although the concept of the picnic originated in France, the British have very much taken it to their hearts.

It is thought that the average person in the UK goes on three picnics a year, enjoying the sunshine and the fresh air it brings. So grab your blankets and baskets out of the cupboards and get out to the great outdoors, for a good old-fashioned picnic.

Picnics are an inexpensive, easy way to spend time with friends and family and enjoy the beautiful weather, snack on delicious foods, and soak up some extra vitamin D. This day is the ultimate excuse to plan a romantic sunset picnic for your partner, or a family-fun picnic in the park!

If you’re planning a spontaneous, last-minute picnic and aren’t sure where to go, consider opening your folding patio doors and setting up your impromptu picnic on the lawn or patio! You’ll have just as much fun picnicking outside in your back garden and you’ll have everything that you need within reach. A great option for care home residents too, if mobility is an issue or you’re currently shielding.

Tips for the perfect picnic day out

The first step in planning the ultimate picnic is to choose the day and location. You’ll want to pick a day that your friends and family are available. Be sure to check the weather ahead of time to find a nice, sunny day to picnic. Pick your favourite place, be it the local park, beach or lake. Take your favourite portable food, packing food that will travel well. Include sandwiches, cheese and crackers and lots of water. Also be sure to pack a blanket to keep you comfy, and those all important hand wipes and sanitisers.

Entertainment

If you’ll be spending the entire day picnicking, think about some fun games for picnickers to play. The grandchildren will have fun with a traditional game of football, rounders or frisbee. For those looking to relax, bring some magazines or a good book. You could also bring some music to enjoy.

Remember to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and hats. Some insect repellent might come in handy, too.

Don’t forget to clear up after your day out, ensuring that you take all your litter with you.
